Transforming an attic into livable space takes extensive planning and expertise. The process involves three main phases:
1. Structural Changes - This first critical stage involves opening up the roof, removing partitioning walls, and adding structural reinforcements like steel beams, joists and rafters to support the new floor and roof. Skylights and dormer window extensions are often added to bring more light and increase head room. Load-bearing walls may need to be built or altered. It's complex structural work that must be done properly to ensure safety.
2. Wired and Insulated - Once the structure is ready, the attic is then insulated, wired for electricity, and refurbished to make it a warm, functional space. Insulation like mineral wool or PIR board is packed tightly between roof rafters. Electrical wiring, plumbing, heating and ventilation are installed. Fire-safe boarding and plastering refinishes the walls and ceilings. Lighting is added. New flooring like timber, laminate or carpet completes the room.
3. Interior Work - With the shell complete, the attic is now ready for conversion into the desired rooms and layout. Staircases are constructed to provide access. Interior walls, doors and architectural detailing create bedrooms, bathrooms, closets and anything else within the floorplan. The final touches like kitchens, wardrobes and bathroom fixtures are added to match the homeowner's style.
Done properly, an attic conversion can greatly increase home value while providing extra living space. What would your ideal loft conversion include? Let us know!
