We'll walk you through it in 3 easy steps:
1️⃣ Remove the old carpet - Start by pulling up all the carpet, padding and tack strips. Use a utility knife to cut the carpet into strips for easy removal. Scrape off all leftover carpet pad adhesive. Inspect the subfloor and make any necessary repairs to uneven or damaged areas so it's smooth.
2️⃣ Install the new wood flooring - Start by laying down underlayment over the subfloor according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. This adds a protective cushion layer. Open the wood flooring boxes and lay the planks facedown to acclimate for 24-48 hours. For glue down installation, apply adhesive as you go, following the spread rate for the flooring size. For floating floors, snap tongue and groove planks together row by row. Use spacers against walls to allow for expansion. Work from multiple boxes and stagger end joints for best appearance.
3️⃣ Complete the finishing touches - Once all planks are installed, remove spacing blocks and install trim pieces like quarter round or baseboards to cover expansion gaps and create a seamless look. Add transition strips between rooms and where the new flooring meets other types of flooring. Finish by cleaning the new wood floors thoroughly before use.
